Books and other readings

Braiding Sweet Grass: Indigenous Wisdom, Scientific Knowledge, and the Teachings of Plants by Robin Wall Kimmerer

I would recommend this book to both clients and therapists. This book can provide valuable insight on what action towards change can look like and how to view ourselves as part of community. This book can help establish a focus on reciprocal relationships and can be a great starting point for discussion about systems of oppression and systems of healing.

Healing the Soul Wound: Trauma-Informed Counseling for Indigenous Communities

I would recommend this book to all therapists, and to clients who have already done the work to build up their skills and want to do some deeper inner work. This book is focused on Indigenous communities and populations. While it offers tools that can be helpful for all individuals, I think it is important to remember not to appropriate practices.

I truly loved this book. It helped balance the Western models that I have been taught with the intuitive and decolonizing practices I continue to learn about. There was helpful insight into generational trauma, addiction, sexual abuse, veterans, and much more.
